String players will often use a vibrato where they vibrate up to (or down from) the pitch, because the ear tends to "assign" the highest heard pitch to a note that is vibrating. I know that, especially on notes in higher positions that are closer together, I make a point of finding the pitch first, and then vibrating "down" from it in order to not appear to be playing sharp.
