That really depends on where the student is in high school and what his/her aspirations are. By all means, every student should be able to play as high as possible with a good sound, but a student interested in a music career should probably at least be able to nail that solo in Meistersinger by their senior year and have some other rep under their belt as well. One of the best things you can ask a student to do is to get to know a lot of rep by having them listen to it (but not necessarily have played it). Go to your library or Barnes & Noble or Amazon.com and check out the CD selections for Prokofiev, Mahler, Bruckner, Shostakovich, Strauss, Wagner, etc.

A truly good high school tubist should probably have at least the Gregson and the Vaughan Williams tuba concertos known very well before they leave. These are two main staples in the rep, both amateur and professional. If the student has an F tuba, he/she should probably be looking at some of the higher excerpts such as Stravinsky, Berlioz (ESPECIALLY Berlioz), and Mussorgsky (Bydlo from "Pictures"). If I may add my own opinion: any aspiring music student should be able to nail and F above the staff on just about any horn. Any higher than that, and you may be pushing it.
