I think Aubrey's post is a little demanding. Sorry Aubrey, but you made it sound as if the guy is not going to succeed if he can't do all of that repertoire. Anyway, I am a big fan of doing stuff that you can sound good on. My teacher put the Vaughan Williams in front of me when I was in high school, so I did it, but once I actually learned how to play, I realized I had NO idea what I was doing with it that early! I think a good place to start for solo repertoire is all-state audition repertoire. Try to find a few different states' lists and try those out. If you want more, than there's plenty more, but why not start with what other people your age are doing, rather than trying to hack your way through something so hard as the VW or the Carnival of Venice.
