Vented valves are valves that have had small holes holes drilled into the side of the outside casing. The holes allow air to escape when the valve is NOT depressed so that you are able to move your valve slides without building up as much back pressure. When the valve is depressed the holes should have not effect on the tone or production of the note.

As for Compensating Valves I will let someone who understands more about them explain it.
