I think I've discerned that the less leadpipe length there is between the mouthpiece and where it enters the valves, has a lot to do with resistance. Rotaries tend to have less distance than pistons. If I were a tinkerer it would be fun to put a really short leadpipe on an open pistion horn, and a really long leadpipe on a stuffy rotary horn, and see if they passed each other in the night.
