Klaus is right about the importance of plating gold over silver. I had a Conn mouthpiece that was gold-plated over brass and it wore through in less than a year.
I also have a gold-plated PT-48, which is gold-plated over silver, that was used extensively in a professional situation for years. The gold is showing a bit of silver in spots, but it still feels like a gold-plated mouthpiece.
One question of Tracy's that hasn't been answered yet: Gold is more slippery than silver, and therefore it has a different feel. Some like it, others don't. I can take it or leave it. Beyond that, it has no acoustic effect.
