I'll leave the gold-over-copper to someone who knows--I sure don't.
But when the gold wears off (as it will eventually), I'd rather have a silver mouthpiece with gold highlights than a copper mouthpiece with gold (and probably green) highlights.
With the Conn, it wasn't the bond that failed. It was the gold being so thin that it wore through, and I was quickly playing a pitted brass mouthpiece with a shiny gold exterior ('cept for the rim). If I wanted a gold Conn Helleberg, I'd buy a silver-plated one and have it plated with gold.
