I share your admiration for a good boss! In any context!
But this "boss" in question has severely cut off the dreams of an involved young player, who has initiated some personal sacrifices of his own, of his parents’, and/or maybe even of his grandparents’. To get himself a tool for musical development. And hence for the best and the bettering of his band.
This "boss" has not clearly trasmitted a well founded reason for his standpoint. Which is very understandable, because no such well founded reason exists.
I explecitely recognise your missing your dad, but basically
"I do very much hope, though, that he says you should use your own instrument."
tells the story, that you do not really trust this "boss" in question. And a non-trusted boss has only one way to go. Out.
