Actually, the plastic guides are very cheap. My Nirschl has these guides and I asked the factory about getting some and they sent me an envelope full of them for free. Further, John Swenson (who posts on this BBS) makes these himself. When I first bought my Nirschl, he graciously sent me some to try out. He is currently experimenting with different materials to make these out of (in an attempt to find more durable and quiet options) and he's currently using Delrin(sp?). I think these plastic guides are easy enough to come by for my horn. Besides, if you're careful when inserting the valve into the casing, these things don't wear out so quickly. I've had my current set in for (I think) over a year and there's no wear that I can detect. Of course it does make it less expensive when the valve guide in question fits so many different tuba models (Nirschl, PT6P, VMI, etc.). I guess it just depends on the make of tuba as to how easy/cheap the guides are to obtain.

My opinion for what it's worth...
