I think it is helpful to control the resistance out the end of the mouthpiece if one is fooling around with this type of exercise. Unrestricted, blowing though a mouthpiece alone is much the equivalent of making the loudest imaginable noises on the tuba...
...OH ! Come to think of it, nevermind. Making the loudest imaginable noises IS the goal, isn't it?
