In the business world, people are screened for the big jobs and then interviewed. Since many may apply and only a few get selected, is that any different? In answer to my own question, it is. At least this way, for orchestra positions, a nobody has a 'chance' to get the job. That won't happen with screening, culling if you will, or by simply hiring the local boy.
Some of us will always be unhappy with the turn of events, particularly if we don't win the job.
Just my opinion.
