Another method of getting a better double tuba is to make a double belled one. Essentially one would use a smallish F tuba and a large CC tuba fitted together. Each would have three compensating valves and there would be a switch valve near the mouthpiece which would choose the desired tuba, complete with the proper lead pipe, valves and bell. Thus we would have one switch valve (rather small), two double valves for each side and one third valve for each side. There would be 7 valves total. The three CC tuba valves could be activated by the left hand and the three F tuba valves by the right hand. I suspect a thumb would activate the switch valve. The result would be a double tuba that would be good in both keys and would afford a lot of muting possibilities not available to tubists!
