In North Carolina, we have a "use" tax. If you buy something in another state and use it in NC, you must pay a use tax which is equal to NC sales tax. Credit is given for sales tax paid to another state, so if I already paid 5% sales tax in a different state, I'd owe NC 1% (since our sales tax is 6%). This tax is now calculated and paid anually with the income tax with special considerations for purchases less than $1000.
