Technically, the only way to purchase an instrument or any other merchandise without paying sales tax is via mail order. The real story on sales tax is that it is due in your home state whether you purchase it there or not. If the store in question, WW/BW is willing to sell to you in the store without sales tax, then they are in violation of state law (most states anyway) concerning sales tax. If the sale is originally consummated in Indiana and then you order the horn when you get back home (Michigan), technically the sale was made in Indiana and you really should be paying Indiana sales tax. If you are purchasing the instrument through another music store, then you will have to furnish a valid re-sale certificate or tax identification number.

So there you have it. How many of you followed those rules?
