Copper is not 50% denser than brass. At 8960 kg/m^3 for copper and 8450 kg/m^3, copper is about 6% denser than brass. It is miserable to machine (tends to tear) and is a bit more expensive than brass (nowhere near twice as expensive), but is not terribly toxic.
Perhaps someone was thinking of beryllium copper, which is very expensive and has toxic dust, but which has a density of about 8250 kg/m^3, which is 2% less than that of brass.
