I don't believe that there's anything magical about adding mass to the valve caps themselves. I think it might be worthwhile to experiement with adding mass at various points in the sound path, starting with the leadpipe.
The only way I could see that massed-up valve caps might be uniquely useful is in the case of an inadequately braced valve section. I suspect that added mass will affect the sound of different tubas differently, depending where the mass is placed. Has anyone experimented, for example, with clamping some extra mass to a tuning slide?
