Well, this goes back about 40 years or more. I checked out a Buescher BBb Sousaphone when I was in H.S. and it sounded a bit stuffy. Hosed it out and found a whole box of Tampax that had been in there for a long time. The horn had been in storage for years as the band had shrunk from around 150 in the 30's to about 40 in the 50's.
Also found apples etc from time to time after a parade.
All in all it was a really nice horn and I was lucky enough to have the band director let me use it for almost 10 years after I graduated.
Had a friend who had a lit firecracker tossed into his bell while marching once. I don't recall much damage to the horn - good think he wasn't playing when it went off, though.
