I haven't even read any of the answers yet, but, as a private teacher and a professional play, I would say that one becomes a professional by acting like a professional.

That means that your child must meet at least this criteria:

Hard work.
Being on time (actually early).
Respecting those in charge.
Respecting and being gracious to those not in charge (or in your charge).
Attending masterclasses and clinics.
Taking lessons and improving your skill.
NO whining, NO excuses. Take your lumps when you fail. Learn from your failures as well as your successes.
Have fun.

If your child follows these rules, then they'll be a professional. It'll only be a matter of time before they get paid to play and teach.
