I stopped using my K&M stand for that very reason. With the way its legs stick out, the stand could never sit low enough to adjust comfortably for this 5'4" tuba player (particularly when I still had my Conn 25J). I spoke with K&M manufacturer's representatives in person at NAMM Shows about this problem, but they had no solution to suggest.
Now, I balance the tuba on my thighs and use rubberized shelf liner to prevent the horn from slipping. This method has been discussed previously on the BBS.
