It's hard to tell from the pictures but the fat stem is actually a piece of pipe used as a shim to keep the valve up rendering it inoperable, allowing the horn to be played as a 3 valve. The cap, I believe, was cut. I can't imagine why. Anyway, as soon as I can I'm going to get it in the shop. I'll let everyone know how it sounds when it comes out. I think I'll hold off on the complete restoration/replating for now and just get it into 100% playable condition. If the kid wants the whole nine yards, he can pay for it later.
