It"s the lower freezing point of the grain alcohol in the vodka. You could just as easily use Rum, Gin, Tequila (my personal favorite), or Whiskey. It's only a deadly reaction if the fumes make you take a header down the bleachers. Most band directors favor rubbing alcohol, but it doesn't taste nearly as good, and the effects when consumed are quite undesirable.
Be sure your section has a designated marcher. Remember, friends don't let friends march drunk.
