I mention this twice in two days, hopefully not again for a long time: I am a computer programmer. If someone wanted to pay me to be a house painter, I would decline because I don't want to be a housepainter. I wouldn't get in the guy's face and tell him what a great programmer I am. If someone wanted to pay me to be a newspaper columnist, I'd jump at the chance, and quit programming like a bad habit.
So, he wants to pay you to be a cornet player. Do you WANT to be a cornet player? If so, this is a great opportunity, so don't worry about whether he was trying to jab you. If you DON'T want to be a cornet player, just smile, thank the guy for the offer, and tell him you'd rather stick to the tuba.
