I know this isn't going to be of much help but I feel Warren's sound in pretty much in a class by itself. It isn't overly dark or bright but has components of both. Perhaps, as you point out, it is the clarity with which he plays that helps a very dark sound appear to be more than just dark. Honestly, his sound is definitely one of my models. He can sound both bright and dark and when he wants to play loud, I don't know of anyone who can match his power. My personal favorites of his work with New York are when Zubin Mehta conducted. In particular, the CD of assorted Wagner works they did was exceptional. Also good was their recording of the Copland 3rd Symphony. If you're looking for a sound to emulate, I'm not sure you could do much better than Warren's.
