How do you get in the game ?

I enjoy reading this BBS and I want to thank Sean for keeping it up. It offers an avenue of communication which was previously non existant, for the most part. I graduated college in the 80's, and once you leave school, depending on where you live, you can feel cut off.

Which leads me to my question : Many people play tuba in high school and college only to drop it somewhere along the way, or to just play now and then after college. Yet, I'm reading in these postings there seems to be more and more people trying to
"get back at it". If a person were to be in their 30's or 40's and was trying to be a legitimate player again, how would the informed people on this board advise such a person ? What literature or methods or solos should one be studying to stay up to snuff ? I realize I don't want to play in a symphony, but I still want to play well and hold my own. Suggestions ?
Also, where are the opportunities to play ? I've done church and community band.
