I used to own a HB2 with rotors. You are correct, they really have what could probably be called the perfect tuba sound (at least in my opinion). The plastic cores are a nightmare. I used to carry ice packs with me for outdoor gigs. I truly believe that we should not be too dependent on equipment.........But I just can't play very well when I have the valves lock up (they don't slow down, they just stop!).

Anyway, I used the HB2 for orchestra and quintet gigs for a few years and then decided to move to a HB21 with pistons(because of the plastic cores in hot weather). The low range response seems more open but the sound is a bit different than the HB2.

If it were between an HB2 and a Miraphone 188 or 186. No contest. I'd have the hirsbrunner and just give up the outdoor gigs or use the f tuba........
