Interestingly, when I learned to play Eb tuba in the late 1950's in elementary school, one of the criterion used to select the tuba students was that s/he already had to be able to read music generally and bass clef specifically -- i.e. had to have had at least two years of piano. Then, I got to jr. high and the director just gave me a BBb sousaphone without even explaining it was in a different key -- but that's another story.
