It blows my mind too!! In the long run, it would seem that there is actually less mental gymnastics by simply memorizing the new clef and be done with it. Piano players read two clefs at once from the very beginning, and I don't think they are any smarter than brass players (certainly not as much fun!) All piano players can play both bass clef and treble clef with either hand, with no set fingerings, and 10 notes at a time!!
