Well, the bore sizes are different, and I think the bells are slightly different. I personally own a 1968 MW Bell model w/detachable bell. A good friend in college owned a new 2145 which played very, very well. But for my money and tastes, the Bell model is the horn to beat. I really believe the detachable bell makes an enormous difference in how this horn plays. My tuba is VERY dark, quite focused, and plays well in tune. Don't let the smallish bore (.689") fool you. I have played quartets/quintets to 85 piece orchestras and never felt under gunned with this horn. I simply can not recommend them highly enough. But remember, the detachable bell horns play much better than the old "Bell" model horns w/o the dectahable bell.
