Dear Chuck: I thought I'd tell you something about the 181 but you have probably discovered it already. The 6 valves give you a wide range of alternate fingerings and eliminate your excuses for playing out of tune. The 181's 1st valve Bb, if in tune, usually means that the lower Eb is flat, and possible the D beneath. I always opted to play the middle Bb with the 6th valve, the lower Bb with the 6,4, and the upper with the first valve. The lower BBb was a weak note on my 181 and took the most breath regulation to keep it from moving out of tune. It's easier to pull the 6th slide than the first, so using 6 and 4 made sense. I agree with advice given below that working out the lower register on the F so that it blends with the brass section is the largest step toward mastery of the instrument. Once you do, your larger horn will stay home more often. Harry Critchley
