I have played the 1291. It's a very nice tuba, but probably not for me, for two reasons. Reason 1: size and ergonomics. I could handle the size, but it was aomething I was thinking about while trying to play it - I don't need the extra distraction. And, I was a bit worried about the prospect of lugging it up and down those three flights of stairs to one of my regular rehearsal sites. Reason 2: price. I can afford it, but one of the reasons I can afford it is that I don't overspend. The 1291 was on my list of "tubas I must play before buying the 2341". OK, now that I've played it...is the 1291 worth the difference in price. For me (esp. combined with reason 1, above) the answer is "no".

But, if you are big enough to handle the size, and pack horse enough to carry it around, and don't mind the price - definitely play the 1291 before buying any other BBb.

I played one at Dillon's in August, and I'm sure that sample has sold by now.
