as for cleaning:
After searching the archives of this list, I recently used vinegar on an old tuba (roughly 50%/50% water) soaked over night. The acetic acid is the stuff that does the work. Some folks might recommend CLR, but the health and usage warnings on the label were a bit too much for me to feel good about using it. For my old instrument (cerveny), this had the result in of causing the lacquer to flake off too. That wasn't my intention, but i'm not bothered by it. This will probably depend on the finish you are actually trying to take off. I followed it up by resoaking in warm soapy water and rinsing out. And, No, it doesn't stink. This won't shine up the instrument.

Taking lacquer off safely, I would use 3-M Safest Stripper since you can practically eat the stuff. You should be able to find it at WalMart.

hope this helps,

Christian Klein
