As someone who used to play BBb and now plays CC but still doubles on tenor t-bone, I can say that the positions won't leave you. Initially, I learned the positions off of valve combinations, but over the two years i've been playing trombone, my arm has learned subconsiously where to go for each note.
In fact, due to marching in the Tech (GO JACKETS) band with a BBb sousaphone, I can almost switch effortlessly between CC and BBb fingerings now.
