Bingo! Many wealthy families who support the cultural institutions in the City are the same families who were involved in starting the SF symphony and the SF opera; some of these families are San Francisco based, others in the surrounding communities on the Peninsula, in the East Bay and Marin.

San Jose has always been considered declasse, synonymous with the "little boxes made of ticky-tack" of popular song fame, and former go-go dancer Carol Doda's advertising for Channel 36 the "perfect 36 in San Jose". However good the symphony in San Jose, it suffers from a lack of respect. A pity, really.
