I agree with that, but somebody also has to have control of the steering wheel. Look at Fleishman in L.A. He ruled the L.A. Phil. with an iron fist, and was responsible for bringing the young and talented Esa-Pekka Salonen on board. It's very, VERY expensive to run an opera house or symphony orchestra, so it becomes very easy to point fingers in all directions when things turn sour. Just for one example, the S.F. Opera has never fully recovered from the loss of Kurt Herbert Adler, who ruled the place like a tyrant but kept extremely high standards. As a result, the public KNEW that they would always get at least a good show. Just one person's opinion - for what it's worth. Also, I think bad concert halls are the *kiss of death* for today's symphony orchestras. Again, just an opinion.
