Above and beyond the management is. . .the Board. These are the unpaid hoy poloy who are the motivation and inspiration for the creation and maintainance of non-profit cultural institutions. The successful and solvent orchestras are reflections of board members who are seriously motivated and hard working, and they will have management and paid staff that reflect these attitudes. Generally speaking, orchestras on the ropes are often the victims of boards who are out of touch with their wider communities, and who incourage management to hire union busting lawyers, and employ devious tactics to demoralize and disunify the musicians during contract negotiations.

So before we nail the management, don't forget who hires the management.
