I carry my mouthpiece in my pocket also, in case I want to buzz, or scoop some ice cream or something like that. I just put mine in the little tray with my pocket change, etc.
No problems at all coming back from the west coast to Colorado three weeks ago.

Saves them from having to go through your bag. In fact, I recommend checking everything and just going on board with the dead minimum, your jacket, mouthpiece, wallet, etc.
They don't even want you to carry finger nail clippers with a file....
