Here is the way I figure it.
Notes wont be just fingering combinations once the kids get used to it. But I could memorize the note names in 5 minutes and it wouldnt make me better.
IMO You cant use the note names till you have figured everythign else out. Other than the Bb or F (as a few specific examples of where to count up or down from).
I dont know about everyone else but until I had practiced for a while it didnt matter what the note name was I had to think about it until i became intimately familiar with it which takes time. Its not that I dont think you should know it, I do, but knowing the fingering in a playing situation should be first on the list.
Just my little high school opinion.
