I'll second this theory. One of my groups have 2 people on 641s. One of them plays MUCH better than the other. One sounds open, rich low end, and pretty much else as described by above (this happened to be the 1st one I have ever seen/played, and so I couldn't understand why people didn't like them). Its an earlier version, with the old leadpipe and german style linkage. The other plays in what seems to be the norm for this horn, stuffy, intonation problems, the works. It is a more recent version, I think it has the uniball linkage, and it has the newer, removable, leadpipe, which is also shorter than the other one. I guess Yamaha lets good ones leak out from time to time
