This is interesting. In what way did the French C tuba sound different than a euphonium? My one opportunity to play a French C tuba gave me the impression that it sounded like a stuffy euphonium, but I was probably playing it like a stuffy euphonium. (Of course, it is true that I can make my Besson sound like a stuffy euphonium, but that's another story.)

I wonder if Mr. Gourlay had a particular approach, or perhaps a particular mouthpiece, that gave his French C tuba unique qualities. Obviously, he is a great player, but what you suggest would require something different than just greatness, or he would sound the same on a euphonium.
