When I first purchased my big Cerveny-built Ziess many years ago,
it had a very very dark dark sound, Dick Ackwright in Oakland suggested
lifting the leadpipe away, the difference was so impressive that the guys
in Simi Valley started having it done on all their horns (that factory
still has lifted lead pipes on their line today) At the time we felt
it brightened the sound of the horn noticably. Thats my experience
with euro-horns. My 6/4 Holton has a removable leadpipe, the screw-brace
on the bell holds it almost an inch from the bell. It sounds different
from any other BAT I've heard or played, and I wouldn't EVEN consider
soldering it back down! And my 5/4 B&M has about 1-1/2" of solder
securing the leadpipe to the bell. On THIS horn I'd consider lifting
it to brighten the sound, I would not solder it further. That's my
experience with American-style horns.
