It depends on your application. For an ensemble and solo horn, the Yamahahaha 621 is a reasonable choice--perhaps even an excellent choice. Used ones go for well under $4K--cheaper than most used CC's. I've used mine in all sorts of ensembles right up to small orchestra and on the upper part in band. Another choice, with less versatility, would be something like a Cerveny. At around $3K (new), you get a horn that sounds good on and above the staff. But the one I had was a real oinker below the staff. I'm willing to admit that it was my fault, however. I've also seen used Alexander F tubas in that price range. And we've heard some good things about the Meinl-Weston 45SLP at a price much less than most 4/4 CC tubas.

But if you want an orchestral F that sounds like a big CC, then you are in the domain of Yamaha 822's, the bigger B&S's, and so forth. Obviously, those cost more.
