Maybe I was too brief.
After 40 plus years of playing this stuff, I've never felt like I knew what I was doing. I can count it but that's it. It's always just a counting exercise. Most musicians I've talked to about it seem to feel the same way.
So my question arises: Is this natural, gut level music to these composers or is it a writing exercise?
