Lanolin is a very versatile grease; it can be thickened/stiffened by melting with beeswax (50/50 works well) and used to keep valve-cap threads from seizing. It also finally stopped a friend's 2nd slide on his Conn 36J from dropping out.

Lanolin can also be thinned with mineral oil for slides that are pulled while playing. I keep an old Al Cass Fast bottle full of 50/50 lanolin/mineral oil for my (aligned and tight-fitting) slides (I probably should relable this bottle "Al Cass Slow"). Valve oil, migrating from the valves or leadpipe tends to thin out the grease on the slides; when a slide stops sliding smoothly, I wipe the slide, inside and out,
and re-apply my mix.
