I agree with everything that was said in the previous post, plus;

I learned a valuable metaphor from Sam Pilafian in which he recommended not focusing on your sound as "loud" or "soft", but rather "tall and wide" or "short and narrow"; imagine your sound as a physical entity, and try to make a sound that eminates about 20 feet straight across and growing until it fills the front edge of the room. A little iffy sounding perhaps, but it works for me.
