Why would a conductor request a Cimbasso for this? It is written for tuba. It is the only Verdi piece specifically scored as such. I'm a former tuba player, who still loves the instrument, but actually prefer the bone crushing, lacquer cracking, dragon slaying sound of a cimbasso, or contrabass trombone, or at least a really really coked-up bass trombone!
