Not to cause too much debate, but why the sudden increase in Cimbasso popularity? I know that early and some middle romantic works were scored for it, but there is a reason why the tuba fell more into favor as the instrument and its performers improved through the 19th century. Recently, I have noticed many tuba players gaining interest in the cimbasso, more than I remember in the past 20 years.

So, here are my questions....

1) Is it that you feel it is right to play parts on the cimbasso because of the composer's orchestration calls for it and what is written should be played? (Understanding that some composers MAY (and this would require research on our part) have rather had the modern tuba if it were available, or in Berlioz's case, had heard a competent player.)

2) The part really does sound better on a cimbasso than on any tuba? (Based on sound, blend, etc...)

3) Or, is it a cool thing to play and learning a new instrument is fun?

Thanks for any input.

Mark
