My inspiration to use cimbasso would be, primarily, the ability to get more work, and to get doubling when working. Musicians invest in instruments to have that type of flexibility. I guess some may document how long it takes the investment to pay off. That being said, if you have a steady opera gig you'll want a cimbasso. If you don't, it's probably not worth it. I still haven't run into a specific conductor request for Verdi Requiem on cimbasso.
