The cloth wrap on the bottom bow of the Holton was put there to pad the horn when placed on a chair, and to help keep it from slipping.

I have a leather wrap on the bell stack of my Miraphone, below the leadpipe, because the instrument is unlacquered and I didn't want the brass to mark up my arm or my sleeve. When I lived in Texas, perpiration was an assumption, and the result of it was green stains that would not come off easily. I haven't needed it on my York Master in more temperate climes.

Similar wrappings of trombone slide handles have the same objective of keeping brass off the player's fingers, or improving grip. I've seen it more often on the tubing just behind the slide joint, where it rubs against the collar.
