I must admit, I've never recorded in a small room over here in the UK (40-50 CD and radio recordings). Smallest would have been a 150-200 people church with a high roof, or possibly a school hall.

A lot of tuba players over here started out in Brass Bands though, which in this country value a massive sound more than technical dexterity in the main. There are many players in lower section brass bands with excellent sounds, but little technique when compared to an orchestral player.

This, of course, could just be my experience and nothing to do with it at all!
