I use Finale to supplement (a sizeable amount) my teaching and playing careers. The way to learn it, in my opinion, is to choose a project and gain the skills needed for that project. Then pick another... Some things it is capable of you may never need, i.e: shaped notes, percussion notation with correct instrument playback, cut-away score sections, ossia measures. Learn what YOU need and leave the rest for later. I teach all of my middle and high school students how to download and use Finale Notepad. Within minutes they are transcribing exerpts to hear them computer performed and then experimenting with original music. By the second session, they can write, print, and perform duets and trios they create for themselves. If they show promise and interest, I suggest the acedemic Finale.
